Ajo Historic Plaza

Details:

Ajo's historic plaza is the centerpiece of the community. The beautiful green central park frames the elegant Spanish Colonial Revival style building constructed in 1917. Surrounding the plaza are other historical buildings including two churches built in the mid-1920s. The plaza beckons locals for festivals and events or a casual stroll.

John Greenway and his wife, Isabella, were the powerhouse couple who directed the construction of the plaza. Greenway was a Rough Rider with Teddy Roosevelt at the Battle of San Juan Hill and the developer of the New Cornelia copper mine. Isabella was a close friend of Eleanor Roosevelt. The two were dedicated to creating a beautiful desert town that reflected the success of the New Cornelia Mine. Alas, the town suffered as a result of Greenway's early death, fluctuating copper prices and mine strikes. The mine closed in 1985 and the town fell into disrepair. In 2008, the International Sonoran Desert Alliance stepped up to create a new vision for the plaza. Today, the redevelopment includes leasing out storefronts in the building to a unique mix of artists and retailers.
