Apache Trail

Historic Apache Trail was completed in 1905, making it the oldest highway in Arizona. The road was built to accommodate the construction of Roosevelt Dam. The route follows the Salt River as it winds its way past the Superstition Mountains and beautiful lakes with stunning desert scenery. The most thrilling part of the route is Fish Creek Hill with its hairpin turns and steep drop offs. Be sure to keep an eye on the road!
The trail was once a stagecoach route that took its name from the Apache Indians who inhabited the area. Much of the road (now known as State Route 88) is paved but some sections, including Fish Creek Hill, are gravel. The road winds through forty miles of rugged desert on its way from Apache Junction to Roosevelt Dam and the photo opportunities are many. Be sure to stop at overlooks of the lakes along the route including Canyon, Apache and Roosevelt. Other fun stops are Goldfield Ghost Town, an 1880s style town complete with gold panning and Tortilla Flat where you can grab a cold drink while sitting astride saddle-topped bar stools. One note of caution, the road is not recommended for large RVs or large trucks and some RV rental companies do not allow their vehicles on this road. It is passable for most passenger vehicles but do use caution and take your time on the drive.
