Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness

Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness is located near Safford in Southern Arizona. The area encompasses over 19,410 acres of canyons, riparian habitat, history and wildlife. An 11-mile hike winds its way along Aravaipa Creek in the shade of huge cottonwood trees. The canyon is up to 1,000 feet deep, its carved walls awash in muted colors. The area is home to diverse wildlife including desert bighorn sheep, over 200 bird species and 12 varieties of bats. Six species of native desert fish are also found here. All this combines to provide a spectacular hiking experience.
Permits are required and up-to-date hiking information can be obtained from the Safford BLM Field Office at 711 14th Avenue in Safford. Only 50 people per day are allowed permits so plan in advance. Remember that the canyon is narrow and at times the only hiking path is in the water. Summer storms can bring lightning and flash floods. Hikers should be informed and prepared. The best hiking times are spring and fall as summer heat can be extreme.
