Arizona Falls

While it is not a natural waterfall, the Arizona Falls represent a piece of Phoenix history and serve as a reminder of the importance of water in Arizona's Sonoran Desert.  The falls are formed by a natural 20-foot drop in the Arizona Grand Canal near 56th Street and Indian School Road. In the late 1800s, this was a gathering place for locals where they could picnic, cool off during the hot weather and even hold social dances.

Today, visitors still gather to cool off in the water room as they learn a bit about the area's history. The room is framed by two aqueducts which give one the sense of being inside the falls. Stone benches and a shade structure provide a spot to rest and enjoy the view.  On the practical side, the hydro electric plant at the falls generates electricity for approximately 150 homes. A stop at Arizona Falls is a great stop while taking a bike ride or walk along the Grand Canal.
