  • The Arizona National Scenic Trail (“Arizona Trail”) is a continuous trail that runs from the South in Mexico (Coronado National Monument) to the North to the border of Utah (Kaibab Plateau).

  • The brain child of the 800+ mile trail was Dale Shewalter, a Flagstaff Arizona teacher. It also forms part of the Great Western loop that is a mere 6875 miles.

The Arizona Trail is free and open to the public every day of the year. No permits are required to enjoy the trail with the exception if you are camping overnight at Saguaro National Park or Grand Canyon National Park.


The trail is open to non-motorized activities:

  • hiking
  • running
  • backpacking
  • mountain biking
  • horseback riding
  • snowshoeing
  • cross-country skiing


The Arizona trail not only connects across the state it allows visitors and locals to enjoy the diversity of Arizona landscapes linking deserts, mountains, canyons, and forests.  


It took three decades to to make the Arizona Trail a reality from the dream of Dale Shewalter. The Arizona Trail Association (ATA) is the non-profit organization responsible for building, maintaining, protection and promoting this great trail.
