Barnhardt Trail

Located near Payson, Arizona, the Barnhardt Trail is a gateway to the beautiful Mazatzal Wilderness. A 6.2 mile round trip hike takes visitors to a 25-30 foot waterfall making it a great moderate day trip. The trailhead is about four miles off HIghway 260 on a maintained and passable dirt road. Once on the trail, there are options to branch off on longer adventures. The trip to the waterfall has an elevation gain of about 1,500 feet and is best done in spring or when there has been recent rainfall.

The trail begins in high desert scrub and continues uphill via a steady climb and then a series of steeper switchbacks. Don't worry, the views are worth the effort. Enjoy the trip to the waterfall and  enjoy this oasis before returning by the same route. If you are up for more hiking, the trail continues to ascend toward Mazatzal Divide and two more falls. Be sure to check trail conditions and study the route before embarking. Also remember, you're in a desert environment so bring plenty of water and snacks to sustain you during the hike.
