At 9,000 feet elevation, Big Lake is a perfect summer getaway in the White Mountains. The lake is considered a prime fishing lake and offers lots of opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. Five campgrounds with a total of 200 sites are located around the lake, some are suitable for large RVs and have hook ups. Others are perfect for tent camping. Activities include hiking, canoeing, mountain biking, wildlife watching or just relaxing. Fishermen will find rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout in the lake. A small campground store has basic necessities as well as fishing supplies and boat rentals.

 

The lake is situated about 26 miles south of Springerville and Eagar and can be reached via Highway 260 and 261. Campgrounds are open mid-April through mid-November but the lake may be accessed during other months depending on weather. Roads are closed during the snowy winter. There is no fee for day use and camping fees vary depending on the type of site required.
