Black Canyon Lake

Details:

Black Canyon Lake is one of the many fishing lakes in the Mogollon Rim country. The lake was built in 1964 to provide water recreation activities including fishing. Game and Fish stocks the lake with Rainbow Trout for the season which is typically May to October.  There is one boat ramp for fishing boats with small trolling motors up to 10 hp. Anglers say that the best trout fishing is accomplished by boat or float tubes either early or late in the day. Some largemouth bass and sunfish are also found in these waters. Entry to the lake area is free but an Arizona fishing license is required.

Two campgrounds are located a short distance from the lake on gravel roads, Black Canyon Rim Campground and Gentry Campground. Both have running water and vault toilets. Both are first come first served. Camping is not allowed at the lakeshore at this time. Although some of the trees were damaged in the 2002 Rodeo-Chediski Fire, the forest surrounding the area is still quite lush. To reach Black Canyon Lake, take Highway 260 northeast to Forest Road 300. Go south on 300 for approximately 2.4 miles and then turn east (left) on Forest Road 86 for approximately 3 miles to the lake turnoff. The roads are closed in winter due to snow.
