Boyce Thompson Arboretum

Boyce Thompson Arboretum is a 323 acre State Park located about a hour from Phoenix in Superior. The park is Arizona's oldest and largest botanical garden featuring plants from various deserts, beautiful scenery and lots of wildlife. The arboretum was originally founded by William Boyce Thompson in 1920. Thompson made his fortune in the mining industry but his inspiration for the gardens came while serving on a 1917 Red Cross mission of mercy to Russia. While there, he came to understand the importance of plants as a source of food, clothing and shelter.

The arboretum is a wonderful oasis in the desert since its elevation supports not only cactus but a wide variety of trees. A tree lined stream and desert lake combine with rugged cliffs to make for an impressive backdrop. There are several hiking trails that are suitable for most visitors. Check at the visitor center for additional information. Park hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.
