Buenos Aires NWR

Details:

The area encompassed by the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge was once a vast grassland area utilized for cattle ranching. A period of severe drought in the late 1800s dealt a blow to the cattle industry and eventually caused mesquite to invade the landscape and edge out the grasslands that provided habitat for the masked bobwhite quail. In the 1980s, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service purchased the ranch so as to restore the semi-desert grassland habitat and reintroduce the bobwhite quail to the area. The refuge is made up of 117,464 acres with a wide diversity of habitat from grasslands to wetlands and scenic Brown Canyon.

Visitors can enjoy wildlife watching, photography, hiking and camping within the refuge. The visitor center is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. all year and on weekends from November through April. There are picnic facilities at the site with a beautiful view of Baboquivari Peak. Admission is free to the public.
