  • Still occupied by Navaho families reflecting continuous, uninterrupted habitation for more than 5000 years; longer than any location on the Colorado Plateau. Just outside Chinle, a must see stop on your Northern Arizona visit.

Canyon de Chelly National Monument

There are no fees to access the more than 10 scenic rim overlooks. One trail available to visitors without fee or guide.  Interior tours require a guide and a permit and fees will vary. Other options are overnight camping (first come, first available; call ahead),  or commercial tours

Visitor center is open daily 8AM-5pm

Fun facts: The Navajos call the canyon "Tseyi-say-ee" which translates to "inside the rock".  However difficulty with the native language, mispronunciation and misspeilling created the Canyon de Chelly (pronounced "de-shay") used today.
