Casa Malpais is a unique archaeological site situated on an ancient basalt lava flow. The ruins date to the Mogollon culture and include interesting features such as an astronomical calendar, a great kiva (ceremonial structure) and petroglyph panels. This prehistoric culture took advantage of the basalt flow to construct their pueblos. The site was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and opened to the public in 1993.
 
The museum/visitor center contains a variety of artifacts from the area and shows a film narrated in part by Hopi and Zuni elders. The facility is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. From March through November, guests can take a walking tour of the site at 9 a.m., 1 p.m., 1:30 p.m. or 2 p.m. (Tuesday through Saturday only.) Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for youth 18 and younger.
