Chevelon Canyon Lake

Visitors seeking solitude or trophy trout fishing will find Chevelon Canyon Lake a paradise on both counts. There is one catch. Due to its location, only determined and physically fit visitors should make the trek. The lake was constructed in a deep canyon which requires a steep ¾ mile hike from the parking area. The hike is worth it since the lake is stocked with rainbow trout and also contains trophy sized wild brown trout. Those who simply go to enjoy the scenery will not be disappointed since the lake is quite beautiful and rimmed by thick forests.

Chevelon Canyon Lake is accessible from April through November (weather permitting.) It is located 15 miles west of Heber-Overgaard or about 60 miles northeast of Payson. There is no admission but fishing license and trout stamp are required. Primitive camping is available at Chevelon Canyon Campground (six sites with no amenities and a vault toilet) or at Chevelon Crossing Campground on Forest Road 504 near its junction with Forest Road 169 (five sites and vault toilet.) Campsites are free and are first come, first served. To reach the lake from Payson, travel Highway 260 to Forest Road 300 (Rim Road.) Go west on 300 for 8.5 miles to Forest Road 169. Turn north on 169 and proceed 12 miles to 169B. Take 169B two miles to the campground and parking area. Much of the drive is improved gravel road so use caution.
