Cibola National Wildlife Refuge

Details:

Water brings life to the desert and provides critical resources for wildlife, birds and humans. The Cibola area was the ancestral home of the Yuma Tribes of the Colorado River, particularly the Mohave and Quechan. Today, the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge follows the path of the Colorado River in this region including marshes and backwaters that provide habitat for a variety of birds and wildlife. Since average rainfall is only two inches per year and summer temperatures soar into triple digits, these wetlands support everything from native fish to resident and migratory birds as well as desert dwelling animals and reptiles.

This greenbelt provides birdwatchers with incredible opportunities to view native waterfowl and raptors along with migrating species such as Canada and Snow Geese. Walking paths and observation decks make it easy to explore. Fishermen will find bass, crappie, catfish and sunfish in Cibola Lake (license required.) The refuge headquarters is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free to the public.
