Desert View Watchtower Grand Canyon

Desert View Watchtower is a historic structure located on the East Rim drive of Grand Canyon.  Designed by Mary Colter, this circa 1932 building was designed to look much like the prehistoric towers found at a number of ancient ruins in the Four Corners Region. The tallest portion of the building is five stories high and is perched on a point overlooking an expansive view of Grand Canyon and Colorado River. Inside, the curved staircase leads to Native American murals, some by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie depicting Hopi mythology and culture. The spiral walk is punctuated by windows overlooking the landscape and one floor opens to an outside deck with amazing Grand Canyon views.

Desert View serves as an interpretive center and gift store. There is a small admission to access the upper floors of the tower. Nearby, visitors can find a snack shop, groceries and supplies and a campground. Train your binoculars on the Colorado River far below and you just might see a river raft journeying down the mighty Colorado.
