Dragoon Mountains

Details:

The spectacular Dragoon Mountains run south to southeast through the area near Willcox, Arizona. The range is characterized by large granite boulders that exhibit whimsical shapes and make for great photo opportunities. The famous Apache Chief Cochise used this rugged range as a hideout until his capture in 1871. Cochise died on the Chiracahua Apache Reservation in 1874 and was reportedly buried at a secret location within the Dragoons.

The can be accessed via Forest Route 84, a maintained dirt/gravel road that is generally passable by car. There are several stream crossings that should not be attempted after a rain. Check with local forest service offices for up to date conditions and be prepared before entering this remote area. The reward is amazing scenery and solitude.
