Ruby Road Scenic Drive

Details:

Ruby Road offers a wonderful combination of southern Arizona scenery with mining history. Its name comes from the once bustling mining camp located on the edge of the Parajito Mountains. The panoramic views include rolling grassland hills, two small lakes, mountains and the remains of the old mining town. Although the ghost town is on private lands, it is still possible to view the many standing buildings from the drive. Pena Blanca Lake is a good spot for birdwatching and fishing. A short hike on the Atascosa Trail takes visitors to a panoramic overlook of the surrounding area.

To reach the Ruby Road, take Interstate 19 about 8 miles north of Nogales to the Ruby interchange. Go west to Pena Blanca Lake where the road changes to Forest Road 39. Continue on Forest Road 39 to Forest Road 216 leading to the town of Arivaca. Take Arivaca Road back to Interstate 19. Use caution on the unpaved section as it may be slippery and rutted when wet. Total driving time on Ruby Road is 55 miles or about 2-3 hours.
