Those who expect Arizona to be filled with desert scenery are in for a treat on the White Mountain Scenic Drive. This beautiful forested route includes views of the state's largest mountain range and it's second highest peak, Mount Baldy. The drive  begins in Alpine, a few miles from Springerville, and concludes in Hon Dah (the Apache word for "welcome.") A section of the road is gravel but passable by car. This is a late spring through fall route as high elevations have snow in winter and portions of the road are closed.

From Alpine, head west on Forest Road 249 (some maps show it as Forest Road 276) through Williams Valley. Open meadows ringed by forests make this an ideal spot for a picnic or easy hikes. In winter, this is a great spot for cross country skiing. Continuing beyond Three Forks, the road changes to Route 24 and soon to AZ 273. A signed short detour leads to Big Lake. Bring fishing gear as the lake contains Rainbow, Cutthroat, Apache and Brown trout. Back on AZ 273, the road passes Crescent Lake in about two miles. This is another good fishing or picnic spot.

The drive takes visitors past Mount Baldy in the White Mountains. At 11,590 feet it is the second highest peak in Arizona. Hiking trails lead up the mountain but the summit is sacred to the Apache and off-limits to hikers. The White Mountains are also home to Sunrise Ski Area, a winter playground for skiers and snowboarders.

At the end of AZ 273, the route joins AZ 260 and continues to Hon Dah on the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation. The route passes the Mogollon Rim, an escarpment that marks the edge of the Colorado Plateau. This plateau boasts massive cliffs and deep canyons so the views are quite spectacular. From Hon Dah, return to Springerville by way of AZ 260 or take the time to explore more of Northern Arizona's wonderful scenery.
