Widforss Trail

Widforss Trail offers hikers at the North Rim of Grand Canyon an opportunity to enjoy a relatively easy hike through beautiful evergreen forests punctuated with views of the Grand Canyon along the way. The eventual destination is Widforss Point and the entire hike is approximately 10 miles round trip. An out and back trail, the hike offers visitors the option to do all or part of the hike. Unlike inner canyon hiking, Widforss is a pleasant mix of forest and views. The elevation gain/loss is minimal so the distance is not so daunting.

The trail begins at the Widforss Trail parking area. To get to the trailhead take the dirt road that begins about ¼ mile south of the road that takes you out to Point Imperial and Cape Royal, or one mile north of the North Rim Campground, across from the parking lot for the North Kaibab Trail, off of the main park road. The parking area and trailhead are about one mile in on this unpaved road.
The first three miles of the trail follow right along the rim of The Transept. Stop and enjoy the view at your leisure. Then continue this pleasant hike all the way to Windforss Point, a great spot for a picnic lunch before returning the same route. Remember that Grand Canyon weather is unpredictable. Wear good hiking footwear and carry plenty of water and food as well as layers of clothing. No permits are required for day hiking on the trail but be sure to pay the National Park admission fee.
